Radiculopathy (Sciatica)
What is Radiculopathy?
Radiculopathy occurs when a spinal nerve becomes compressed, irritated, or inflamed, leading to pain, weakness, or numbness that radiates down the arms or legs. One of the most common forms of radiculopathy is sciatica, which affects the lower back and legs.
Causes of Radiculopathy (Sciatica)
- Herniated or Bulging Discs – A damaged disc can press against the spinal nerves.
- Spinal Stenosis – Narrowing of the spinal canal can lead to nerve compression.
- Bone Spurs (Osteophytes) – Excess bone growth can irritate nearby nerves.
- Degenerative Disc Disease – Age-related wear and tear on spinal discs may cause nerve compression.
Symptoms of Sciatica & Radiculopathy
- Sharp, burning pain that radiates down the leg (sciatica) or arm
- Numbness or tingling in the affected limb
- Weakness in the muscles supplied by the compressed nerve
- Pain that worsens with movement, sitting, or prolonged standing
Chiropractic Treatment for Radiculopathy & Sciatica
At Blue Line Medical, we use non-invasive therapies to relieve pressure on the nerves and restore mobility:
- Chiropractic Adjustments – Correcting misalignments to reduce nerve compression.
- Spinal Decompression Therapy – Gently stretching the spine to relieve pressure on discs and nerves.
- Soft Tissue Therapy – Relieving muscle tension and reducing inflammation.
- Targeted Exercises – Strengthening muscles and improving spinal stability.
Compression Fractures
What is a Compression Fracture?
A compression fracture occurs when a vertebra in the spine collapses, leading to severe pain and decreased height. These fractures are often caused by osteoporosis, trauma, or spinal tumors.
Causes of Compression Fractures
- Osteoporosis – Weakening of the bones makes them more susceptible to fractures.
- Trauma or Injury – A fall or accident can result in a vertebral fracture.
- Spinal Tumors – Cancerous growths may weaken the spine, increasing fracture risk.
Symptoms of Compression Fractures
- Sudden or gradual onset of severe back pain
- Loss of height or a hunched posture (kyphosis)
- Limited spinal mobility and difficulty bending or twisting
- Pain that worsens with movement and improves with rest
Chiropractic Care for Compression Fractures
While chiropractic care cannot reverse a fracture, it can help manage pain, restore mobility, and strengthen the spine:
- Gentle Spinal Adjustments – Improving alignment and reducing strain on surrounding areas.
- Rehabilitation & Strength Training – Strengthening muscles to support the spine and prevent future fractures.
- Postural & Ergonomic Counseling – Reducing stress on the spine through proper posture and movement techniques.
